The Tammil Nadu milk coop are producing 50,000 litres of milk at their facility we visited in Chennai, a day. This is in addition to the other 4 processing centres strategically placed around the Tamil Nadu region in order to be able to process then distribute fresh milk to the 70 million people daily.
The milk here is produced in 500ml bags. The bags make it easier to distribute for packing and reduce the cost of production. Each 500ml milk bag is worth about 40 Rupee (or $.20c AUD). The milk co=op is not run to make a profit but simple to provide milk so the cost has remained the same for years and years. Apparently there was a huge uprising when a suggestion was made to increase the milk price by 1 rupee a few years ago.
