Galiff Street: A walk into the pages of history

The local train ride to Shyambazar early in the morning was so not as per expectation; not much of a local passenger myself and hence an early morning ride, plus it being a Sunday had me convinced I could play volleyball in the empty coach. I was wrong.

Apparently daily passengers traveling all the way from Bongaon to God knows where thronged the compartments, and to make matters worse, some carried stuff they intended on selling; not against the livelihood of vendors, in fact, they are the reason I can go to the local market and pick up stuff at competitive prices; but nevertheless, I am not much of a fan of being almost knocked over by a gigantic sack of potatoes.

A couple of stops later, I landed on the Bidhan Nagar Station and hailed a cab to the hallowed Galiff Street Pet Market. The market assembled only on…
