This recipe is three things: super cheap, super easy and super tasty.

Authentic Bengali DalIt may not look much in the photo, but honestly it’s delicious! I’m always amazed at how so much flavour can come from just five simple ingredients. It packs a real kick of garlic, so make sure you have some mints to hand for any post-lunch meetings. Lentils make sure it goes further and keeps you full for the rest of the day.

It’s a traditional Bengali family recipe from my boyfriend, normally served as a side with a chicken or lamb curry, but it’s just as good as the starring part of a meal by itself. Because it’s been passed down through the family, the measurements and method are approximate or done by eye – just chuck it all together! I think it makes the perfect lunch and I’ve had more than a few compliments from curious…
