Re-visiting the Lal Qila

I have a very faint memory of having visited the Red Fort as a kid with my parents, years ago when we had come to Delhi from Calcutta probably on one of the long school vacations.

Fortunately for me, last week I chanced to see the magnificent structure again. The visit was arranged by the Archaeological Survey of India so we could access even those areas that are usually cordoned off to the general public. To our surprise the premises was packed with people. It was a Friday and I had not imagined that great a footfall. Standing in the area from where our President makes the Republic Day Speech and looking at the view in front of the entire old Delhi (that’s how the area was constructed – the Fort being the central point to the whole city) was indeed an experience.
