Salt Trails

The everyday markets in the cities are amazing to see. They are action packed with people going about their daily lives. Some seem to be by for a few things, some buy in bulk. The crowd moves with purpose. A million different colors fill the inside of the otherwise drab exterior of the sprawled market. The stalls are arranged tightly around the narrow grid paths. Makeshift tarp roofs and compact rooms protect from the sun. The merchants peer from behind their forts of stacked product, waiting to make a sale.

The markets are organized into sections of fruit and vegetables, spices, grains, blocks of sugar, flowers picked and strung for religious uses, as well as the brightly colored piles of incense. The scent of each area lingers strongly. Bright vegetal smells, intense floral aromas, a nose full of muddled, yet familiar spices, and powerful sandalwood stay with me long after leaving…
